Navigating the NDIS

A Step-by-Step Guide for New Participants

Starting your journey with the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can feel a little overwhelming — and that’s completely normal. At Queensland Compassionate Services (QCServices), we understand that everyone’s path is different, and we’re here to help you every step of the way.

Whether you’re supporting a loved one or applying for yourself, this guide is designed to help you understand how the NDIS works and how QCServices can support you in reaching your goals.

Step 1: Understand What the NDIS Is

The NDIS provides funding for Australians and permanent residents under 65 with a permanent and significant disability, empowering individuals to live more independently and participate in their communities.

Through the NDIS, you may receive funding for things like:

  • Personal care
  • Daily living assistance
  • Social and community participation
  • Support coordination
  • Capacity building programs

At QCServices, we’re passionate about helping participants get the most out of their NDIS plans through services tailored to their needs.

Step 2: Check If You’re Eligible

To access the NDIS, you’ll need to meet a few basic requirements:

  • Be under 65 years old
  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Have a permanent disability that significantly impacts your ability to do everyday tasks

If you’re not sure if you or your loved one qualifies, we can help guide you through the eligibility check and application process.

Step 3: Apply for the NDIS

You can apply by calling the NDIS directly (1800 800 110) or by completing an Access Request Form. You’ll need to provide some supporting documents, such as:

  • Evidence of your disability
  • Reports or assessments from healthcare providers

Don’t worry — QCServices can assist you in gathering the right documentation and submitting your application correctly.

Step 4: Create Your NDIS Plan

Once your application is approved, you’ll meet with a Local Area Coordinator (LAC) or an NDIA planner to develop your NDIS plan. This plan outlines your goals and the support you need to reach them.

This is a critical step — and you don’t have to do it alone. We can support you during this meeting, please reach out to us!

 Our team at QCServices can:

  • Help you prepare for your planning meeting
  • Identify services that match your goals
  • Offer advice based on your unique situation

Step 5: Put Your Plan into Action

Now that you’ve got your plan, it’s time to start using it! QCServices offers a wide range of NDIS-funded services including:

  • Support Coordination – Helping you connect with the right providers and navigate your plan
  • Life Skills & Capacity Building – Building confidence and everyday abilities
  • Community Participation – Supporting you to engage in social, recreational, and community activities
  • We’re here to ensure you get the most out of your funding and feel empowered every step of the way.

Step 6: Review and Adjust

Your needs may change — and that’s okay. Every NDIS plan is reviewed regularly (usually every 12 months), and you have the right to request a review sooner if needed.

QCServices is with you through every change. We’ll help you:

  • Track your progress
  • Prepare for reviews
  • Make adjustments as your goals evolve

Let’s talk about how we can support your journey

At QCServices, we believe in supporting you with compassion, respect, and purpose. Whether you’re just starting out or needing help managing your current plan, we’re ready to lend a hand — and a heart.
